The word Derwish, especially in European languages, refers to members of Sufi Muslim ascetic religious fraternities, known for their extreme poverty and austerity, similar to mendicant friars.

As Sufi practitioners, derwishes were known as a source of wisdom, medicine, poetry, enlightenment, and witticisms.
